Why damage claims at return are risky
Rental companies sometimes charge for damage already present at pickup or hard to prove — scratches on undercarriage, roof or inside. Without proper documentation, disputing these claims is very difficult.
Even with CDW, you may still be liable for excluded categories: tyres, glass, roof or undercarriage damage.
Never sign a damage report without thoroughly inspecting the car and comparing it with your pickup documentation.
How to document damage at pickup
- Photograph all four sides before driving away
- Photograph roof and underside if accessible
- Check the damage report provided by the rental company
- Note any damage not on the report and have it countersigned
- Keep a copy of the pickup documentation
Use smartphone video for a slow walk-around at pickup and return. Timestamps serve as evidence.
What to do if damage is claimed at return
- Do not sign anything before comparing with your pickup photos
- Request a written damage report with location and extent
- Ask for the repair cost estimate in writing
- Contact your travel insurance or credit card provider immediately
- Document everything with photos and notes

What to check in your contract
Before signing, verify which damage categories are covered, what the excess is, and the return inspection procedure.
- Are tyres, glass and roof coverage explicitly stated?
- Is the excess amount clearly specified?
- Is the return inspection procedure described?
