Why rental car prices are often misleading

Online prices show only the base rate — before mandatory fees and taxes. By the time you reach the counter, the total can be 30–100% higher than advertised.

Many fees are disclosed somewhere in the small print. Knowing what to look for gives you a significant advantage at the counter.

The most common hidden fees

Airport surcharge
10–30% added for airport pickups. Often not in the base price shown online.
Young driver fee
Daily charge for drivers under 25. Can be 10–30 € per day.
One-way fee
Charged for different pickup and return locations. Can be 100–500 €.
Additional driver
Daily charge per extra driver. Often 5–15 € per day per driver.
GPS fee
Daily fee for built-in navigation. Often 10–15 € per day.
Fuel policy
Full-to-empty policies require fuel prepayment. Not returning full triggers refuelling charges.
